Profile

Shoichi Minabe is a photographer based in Kobe, Japan. For many years he worked in IT, proposing and modernizing data center infrastructure. His interest in systems that support everyday convenience while rarely being noticed shapes his practice: through photography, words, and music, he explores the traces of human activity and time left in urban infrastructure and in the nature close at hand. He graduated from the Photography Course, Department of Fine Arts, Distance Learning Division, Kyoto University of the Arts, in March 2026.

Artist Statement

To cut time with light.
What a photograph holds is the light gathered while the shutter was open, and the time inscribed in its subject before that moment. My attention rests where these two kinds of time meet.
Urban infrastructure that keeps running even when no one is there. What remains after people have gone. Small changes that repeat in familiar places. Surfaces that bear the marks of wear and weathering. Cities, people, and objects each carry the time they have accumulated. Through light and shadow, form, and texture, I look at how that time appears in the present.
In Night Worker, Night's Remains, Radius 200m, and Surface, I approach these different subjects to explore human activity and its traces, and the time that flows through everyday life. This interest extends into Urban Strata and Layers of Time, which trace the time layered into the landscape.
In Codes Beneath Our Feet, I slow the shutter to capture passersby as afterimages. During the exposure, their figures waver and remain in the city as traces of movement. In Drift, by contrast, familiar things shift between light and shadow into forms that resist a name. A photograph records what is there, and at the same time asks how we see the world.
Portraits of a Life, a commissioned portrait project, grew out of this same way of seeing. It meets the time each person has lived, and through the person before me now, captures a sense of the days they have walked.
Words and music born from photographs are also part of my practice.
It began with turning the statements for my photographic works into lyrics. In time, I began composing songs from words that came to me while looking at photo series. Abstract works without statements have given rise to instrumental and spoken-word versions. The light and dark of the images, their sequence, forms, and negative space, become cues for words and sound.
The time held still in a photograph, and the time that flows in music. Viewers move back and forth between the two: looking at a photograph, listening to words and sound, and returning to the photograph once more. In that back-and-forth, a different presence emerges from the same image, and viewers' own memories and sensations come to overlap with it.

Through light, I hope to capture the time inscribed in cities, people, and objects, and, through photography, words, and music, to connect it to the time of those who view it.
