Urban Strata
Sannomiya, Kobe, between mountain and sea. Overlapping signs, old walls and new light, and the presence of passing lives reveal the city’s layered memories and its ever-changing present.

English — Urban Strata
The Rokko wind comes down singing through the wires
The mountains feel close enough to touch
And the city rises in between
Pressed into a narrow strip of land
Countless shops and passing lives
Signboards compete for pieces of sky
While the alleys raise the night
Words carried in by the harbor
Became part of this city's voice
Alley smells and languages in the air
People still pass each other every day
Lunch lines gather in the daylight
Daylight steals the color from the night's signboards
Things that never truly blend stand side by side
Only the signs glow honestly
Thirty years ago
This city came apart
Yet people built upon the ruins
And laid down new layers
Urban strata
Shadows of overlapping signs
The Rokko wind
Shakes the wires as it passes through
Urban strata
Closed shops and new ones
Upon somebody's yesterday
Another today is built
Students crossing at the lights
A scooter heading home from deliveries
A man in a suit smoking alone
Backstreets still holding laughter
The day of someone I'll never know
Crosses another every few meters
Maybe this city
Remembers people before people do
At the end of a road sloping toward the sea
The evening sun shatters across glass
Turn around and the Rokko ridge remains
Breathing within the valley of streets
Urban strata
Layers of memory intertwined
The Kobe unseen in tourist photos
Is right here
Urban strata
Old walls and new light
Look up into the narrow sky
And the wires go on forever
The tangled wires above
Are like nerves without a map
Carrying laughter and sighs
Somewhere, still carrying on
Those who remember before the quake
And those born long after
Walk the same alleys
Living different versions of Kobe
Urban strata
A city between mountain and sea
Never truly finished
Still changing shape today
Urban strata
The Rokko wind keeps moving through
Holding countless lives within it
And Sannomiya keeps on breathing
