Layers of Time
From Shin-Kobe to Tokyo, cities, fields, and factories pass by the train window—landscapes layered with the time people have built, forgotten, and lived.

English — Layers of Time
Leaving Shin-Kobe
we’re swallowed beneath the Rokko mountains
For a few dark minutes in the tunnel
another version of myself
stares back from the window
The station lights still linger behind my eyes
Then suddenly, light
The Yodogawa glitters in the morning sun
Osaka waiting beyond the water
Dreams of the old water city
sleeping beneath the riverbed
Elevated highways
windows in towers
factory chimneys breathing smoke into the sky
Morning Japan begins to move
Two hours and forty-one minutes
short enough to vanish
long enough to become a journey
Same railway line
never the same view twice
Civilization through the window
fragments of a passing nation
Beyond rusted smokestacks
Mount Fuji stands in silence
Is this progress
or decay?
Leaving judgment behind
the train to Tokyo
keeps its answers to itself
Leave the city behind
and suddenly the rice fields open wide
Carefully shaped farm roads
small quiet houses
warehouses forgotten by time
Beside them
massive logistics centers
new solar panels catching the light
Old and new
standing side by side
without a word between them
Even on days I don’t take photographs
my eyes become the shutter
The landscapes I cannot capture
are the ones that burn the deepest
Civilization through the window
layers of time built by human hands
Things created in the name of convenience
things disappearing without a sound
Dreams from a hundred years ago
now standing as ruins
Today’s hopes
will grow old someday too
Some days Fuji appears
some days it doesn’t
But I know it’s there
The things that never enter the frame
are the ones that remain the strongest
Two hours and forty-one minutes
Through tunnels
across the Yodogawa
past rice fields
watching industrial zones
toward Tokyo
Destroying to build
building to forget
Across these layers of time
the train keeps moving
The face of this country
still unknown to us all
