Night's Remains
Between the end of night and the stirrings of morning, these photographs trace what human activity leaves behind and the time layered into the city.

English — Night's Remains
As the night comes to an end
The neon slowly falls asleep
Shutters close their tired eyes
Garbage bags wait for the morning truck
Stacks of empty beer crates
Still remember the rain-soaked night
Only waiting taxis
Keep their engines softly humming
The wind descending from Mount Rokko
Slips through deserted alleyways
Beneath this asphalt
Countless nights lie sleeping
Even this city,
Once believed to never sleep,
Finally exhales in its sleep
Night's remains
Empty cans reflecting the night before
Lined up like they're still telling its story
Leaving only traces of someone's laughter
Morning asks no questions
It simply sets the city in motion once again
Black wings tear open the dawn
The city's wild side wakes
Beaks quietly rip apart
Bags filled with yesterday's dreams
When the struggle is over
Only a single feather remains
Young people waiting for the first train
Still laughing through their unsteady steps
Belonging neither to night nor morning
They watch the sky begin to pale
The first-train crowd
Keeps talking where the laughter left off
Never knowing they are being watched
Still smiling through the fading night
Only the crows
Measure their backs from overhead wires
Unaware of these two silent gazes
I watch them through my viewfinder
Night's remains
Empty cans reflecting the night before
Lined up like they're still telling its story
Only the morning
Quietly gathers the time left behind
Cheers become the wind
Lights dissolve into the morning sky
The Rokko wind blows through
Above, construction cranes
Keep building a city that never quite finishes
This morning's remains
Will become another layer of the night
The city says nothing
Yet quietly keeps breathing
Until another night
Begins to gather once again
